My Approach: Balanced Dog Training

84K9 uses a balanced approach to dog training. This method allows us to tailor our techniques to the unique needs, temperament, and learning style of each individual dog—whether it’s a high-drive working K9 or a family companion.

We believe that no two dogs are exactly the same, and successful training requires flexibility, fairness, and structure. A balanced approach gives us the tools to effectively communicate, motivate, and correct in a way that builds trust and long-term results.

What is Balanced Dog Training?

Balanced dog training is a method that uses both positive reinforcement (to reward and encourage desired behavior) and appropriate correction (to clearly discourage unwanted behavior), with the goal of achieving a well-behaved, confident, and reliable dog.

It typically involves:

  • Positive reinforcement: Rewarding good behavior using treats, praise, play, or other motivators to strengthen the dog's understanding of what to do.

Fair correction: Using humane, clear consequences (such as leash pressure, verbal markers, or tools like prong or e-collars when appropriate) to help the dog understand what not to do. These are used after the dog understands what’s expected—not as punishment, but as clear communication.
